The Issue "The Humanitarian Crisis Relief was an effort which began last summer due to the influx of immigrants crossing the border who didn't have an adequate place to rest. Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley (CCRGV) with the help of the Sacred Heart Church, the City of McAllen, as well as volunteers and donations, opened its doors to the Respite center, located at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in McAllen Texas. The center provides a place for the countless men, women, children, and infant refugees to rest, have a warm meal, a shower, and change into clean clothing as well as receive medicine and other supplies, before continuing onto their journey. As of August 2015, we have assisted over 23,000 individuals." - Catholic Charities
The Project Rosa from Catholic Charities outlined the need for garments, leggings and t-shirts. We were able to send a set of leggings with each dress and each garment received a new t-shirt. Rosa said 50 families a day come into Catholic Charities in McAllen, and the family members range from infants to the elderly.
Project Info The team spent 324 hours sewing 108 garments in 2023 for this community. Each garment was accompanied by a t-shirt. All of the dresses were accompanied by a pair of leggings (83 in all.)
Thank You "We heard first hand of the need in McAllen with so many refugees crossing the border. While Catholic Charities receive clothing donations, they are not always in the best of shape. Our garments are well made and brand new. Given the dresses are reversible as well they should last a long time and can be passed down." - Valerie
